Steve Urkel Costume Ideas

    Catchphrases and The Voice

    • An integral part of a Steve Urkel costume includes capturing the essence of the Steve Urkel character. For a more authentic costume, you need to speak in a high voice with a nasal tone. Phrases that Jaleel White made popular while portraying Steve Urkel should also be utilized. These phrases include "Did I do that?" and "Look what you did!" Another popular phrase that Urkel repeated ad nauseum was, "Got any cheese?" Urkel was also known to say, "I'm wearin' you down, baby" and would simply say "Whooooaaa mama!" when he saw a woman he found attractive.

    The Clothing

    • Steve Urkel's clothing stood out as much as his personality and antics did. The trademark of Steve Urkel's wardrobe was a pair of pants that were hiked up as high as they could possibly go, leaving a considerable amount of sock exposed, as the bottom of the pant leg was at least six inches from the ground. The shirts were usually of the button-up variety, with the top button never open, always buttoned at the neck. In addition to the shirt, Steve Urkel also frequently wore a cardigan sweater. For shoes, Steve Urkel mainly wore a pair of plain brown loafers with longer brown laces.

    The Accessories

    • Possibly the most important part of an Urkel costume are the accessories. In addition to the clothing, Steve Urkel's wardrobe was always heavily augmented by a variety of accessories that fulfilled the image of the "uber-nerd" that the creators of "Family Matters" had envisioned. Urkel wore the thickest glasses possible with thick, dark brown frames. Urkel also wore a pair of rainbow suspenders to keep his pants hiked up high. Other possible accessories would be a pocket protector for the front shirt pocket and a small, pocket-sized calculator.

    The Alter Egos

    • In addition to Steve Urkel, Jaleel White also played Steve's fictional alter ego, Stefan Urquelle. Stefan would be dressed in an opposite manner, with fashionable shoes, stylish clothing and contact lenses instead of glasses. Steve Urkel was also frequently portrayed as sort of a mad scientist, wearing a white lab coat and protective goggles in his basement testing facility, where he would try to formulate various potions and formulas.
