- 1). Check the pool filter pressure levels. If the pressure is 8 to 10 lbs. heavier than the normal reading, then the pool must be backwashed. Switch the filter setting to backwash, and set a timer for 10 minutes. You can continue to clean other parts of the pool while the filter is backwashing.
- 2). Switch the filter back to filtration after 10 minutes. Allow the filter to run for 10 minutes, then switch back to backwash. Continue to switch between these modes for a total of three times.
- 3). Clean the skimmer baskets while waiting on the filter to backwash. Remove all leaves, bugs, hair and other debris from the baskets. Make sure to remove all items, leaving the baskets completely clean.
- 4). Brush the walls and floor of the pool with the long-handled brush. This removes any dirt and algae that is growing on the sides and floor of the pool. Work one wall at a time, and finish with the floor.
- 5). Allow the water to settle for 30 minutes. Use the net to catch any floating particles in the water. Most will stay on the top of the pool, but some will be closer to the bottom and may be harder to gather.
- 6). Allow the dirt to settle for an additional 10 minutes. Vacuum the floor of the pool to remove the contaminants that you brushed from the walls of the pool. Work slowly to allow the vacuum to suck up all contaminants, including sand particles.
- 7). Pour a bottle of pool shocking chemicals into the pool to kill any bacteria or algae that may be growing in the water. Follow the directions on the bottle as to how much of the chemicals to add for your size pool.
