- 1). Put on your work gloves, safety goggles and mask before beginning work.
- 2). Prepare your work area. Make sure that it's well-ventilated and that there's plenty of room, ideally it's best to do it outside. Lay down cardboard or newspaper to prevent your area's floor from being stained. You can also prepare your wood for finishing by removing any dust or grease.
- 3). Sand down your wood with coarse paper to remove any visible markings or uneven areas. If you don't have any of these, you can begin sanding it down with medium grit paper. Just be sure to sand it down until it's smooth enough to finish.
- 4). Hold your polyurethane spray about a foot away from the project and begin spraying a single light coat horizontally, from left to right and then top to bottom (like reading). Be very careful to spray evenly. Wait until the first coat is fully dried before continuing.
- 5). Sand down the first coat with fine grit sandpaper until it's smooth again.
- 6). Apply another coat of polyurethane spray in the same fashion. Sand it down and add as many layers of the finish as you like until it looks the way you want. Give it at least 24 hours to dry after you apply the final coat before moving it to its new permanent home.
