What is shaktipithâEUR¦?
The Shakti Peethas are the places where in the body parts and belongings of Sati fell, when Lord Shiva took her dead body on his shoulder and started Tandav Nritya out of rage and sorrow. The female principal of Hinduism is observed in these pithaas. The body parts which were severed by Lord Vishnu to calm down Lord Shiva scattered throughout the Indian subcontinent.
It is said that goddess Shakti is the complete incarnation of Adi Shakti, has three main impartations first as Durga, the Goddess of strength, second Mahakali, the goddess of destruction of evil and third Goddess Gowri, the goddess of graciousness. Lord Brahma performed yajna to please Shakti and Shiva.
Goddess Shakti emerged and helped Brahma to create the universe. His son Daksh wanted to obtain her and hence he performed yajna to get Shakti as his daughter. It was then decided that Sati could be brought into this world with the motive of getting married to Shiva. But for the indifferent situation Lord Shiva got angered and cut off Brahma's fifth head and cursed him that he will not be worshipped. Daksh became furious as his father had lost his fifth head and started hating him. He decided not to let Lord Shiva and Sati get married. However, Sati got attracted to Shiva and finally one day Shiva and Sati got married. This marriage only increased Daksha's hatred towards Lord Shiva.
To belittle Shiva he arranged for a yajna in which he did not invite Shiva and Sati in the celebration. Sati wanted to visit the celebration but Shiva had his objections. Shiva eventually relented and Sati went to the yajna. Sati, being an uninvited guest, was not given any respect at the yajna. Furthermore, Daksha started insulting Shiva. Sati could not bear the insults toward her husband, so she immolated herself.
Enraged at the circs, Shiva destroyed Daksha's yajna and cut off Daksha's head and replaced it with that of a male goat. Still in grief, Shiva carried the corpse of Sati's body, and performed the Tandava, the celestial dance of destruction, across the universe. Seeing the state of holocaust the other Gods requested Vishnu to intervene to stop this destruction, towards which Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra, which cut off the Sati's corpse in 51 parts. The various parts of the body fell at several spots all through the Indian subcontinent and formed sites which are known as Shaktipith today. At all the Shakti Peethas, the Goddess Shakti is accompanied by her consort, Lord Bhairava (a manifestation of Lord Shiva). Take the Saktipith spiritual tours of these places for peace in your life.
