How to Prepare for a Breast Cancer Biopsy

    • 1). Research the breast cancer biopsy types. There are four typical breast cancer biopsy tests: core needle biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, surgical biopsy and fine needle aspiration biopsy. Talk with your doctor about which biopsy he feels is necessary for your particular situation. Go online to sites such as www.mayoclinic.com and www.breastcancer.org to gather and learn more information about your particular biopsy test.

    • 2). Be your own health advocate. Ask your doctor all the questions you have concerning your test. Ask him to show you the imaging of your lump and to describe what is concerning him the most about it. Get all the information you can about your particular procedure. Find out how long it will take to get an appointment for a breast cancer biopsy. Sign any consent forms and get your "preparing for a biopsy" instruction sheet. Ask how long it will be before you can expect your breast cancer biopsy results.

    • 3). Prepare for the worst - expect the best. Learn as much information as you can about breast cancer including the different stages and prognosis'. Research different breast cancer treatments. Having all of your options in mind when going into your biopsy will benefit you especially if you are diagnosed with cancer. This can also help you to feel more secure and calmer concerning your procedure.

    • 4). Try to relax. The days leading up to your breast cancer biopsy can be an immensely stressful time. Take relaxing walks. Listen to calming music. Consider visiting your religious institution to talk with an authority. Pray. Get a manicure and a pedicure or consider getting a full body massage.
