Homemade Potting Bench

    Size

    • Decide on the size of your potting bench. It is important to be realistic when determining what size you want. Many factors play into this decision, and building a bench that is too large or too small wastes time and money. First, determine where you are going to place your potting bench. If the bench is going to be placed in a shed or other enclosed area, measure the space to see how much room is provided for the finished bench. Also consider how much work space you will need. If you generally plant many plants at a time, a larger workspace may prove more convenient.

Portability is another factor when determining size. If you plan to keep your bench in one specific location, a larger, heavier bench is feasible. If, however, you wish to be able to easily move your bench from place to place, a smaller and lighter design is a better choice. Wheels can be added to increase portability.

    Design and Functionality

    • Plan the overall design of your potting bench. Your finished bench can be as simple or elaborate as you choose. Determine whether or not you want the bench to double as storage, and how much storage space is needed. Make sure that your storage space is easily accessible and provides a method for organizing your tools. More elaborate designs can be built to store fertilizers and plant food, as well as extra pots and all of the tools that you will need during your potting projects. A potting bench can even be built onto, or incorporated into, a garden shed.

    Materials

    • Virtually any type of wood can be used for building your potting bench, as long as it is dry, straight and free of knots. Popular wood choices include cedar, pine and redwood. Pressure treated wood is ideal if your potting bench will remain outdoors. Coating your lumber with a preservative and sealant will help keep moisture and insects from damaging your work station.
