Learn how to start your own organic garden with this quick guide.
One of the best ways to start your own organic garden is "sheet mulching".
Sheet Mulching Sheet mulching is landscaping and gardening technique which enables you to plant onto the top of the ground.
It is a type of "no-dig gardening" where you cover any base or unneeded plant material such as weeds or old grass with layers called "barrier", "compost" and mulch layers.
Sheet mulching will bring down your maintenance costs, improve your water storage, prevent erosion and also improve your soil.
It is a great form of gardening if you are unable to dig down through the soil due to restrictions.
You can use a wide variety of materials for your layers, as long as they are organic and don't contain any protein, e.
g.
fat, bone or meat.
How To Do Sheet Mulching 1) Mark desired garden area with a rope or hose.
2) Cover this area with wet paper or cardboard, making sure to overlap the edges using a minimum of five sheets.
3) Cover this with a layer of compost, peat moss, or any other moist organic matter, about 1-2 inches thick.
4) On top of this, put a layer of several inches of other organic material like leaves, grass, straw, or garden waste.
5) Alternate between these layers until you reach your desired depth.
6) Water until it is as wet as a damp sponge.
7) Regularly add large amounts of compost and mulch to increase the soil level.
