- 1). Water the areas of your yard, two to three hours before dark, where you suspect nightcrawler activity. Attach a sprinkler to a hose and water the ground until it is saturated or squishy when you walk on it.
- 2). Fill a metal or plastic bucket approximately 1/3 full of soil from your yard. This will be the temporary holding place for any nightcrawlers you catch.
- 3). Shine a red light, after dark, on the saturated areas of your lawn to find the nightcrawlers. The red light will not disturb them. Turn over any leaves or rocks in the area as nightcrawlers may be hiding underneath.
- 4). Pull up gently on the nightcrawler's body with your thumb and index finger and then release the pull while still holding the worm. Then, you should be able to easily pull them out of the ground.
- 5). Place the nightcrawlers in the bucket of soil for temporary holding. Dump them in a compost bed or make a worm farm if you plan to keep them longer than 24 hours.
