Once again, our troops are worried about whether they will be paid on the 15th. Let's hope Congress earns their paycheck, by passing a military budget this month!

U.S. Ending Its Air Combat Role in Libya
The Pentagon is about to pull its attack planes out of the international air campaign in Libya, hoping NATO partners can take up the slack, according to an Army Times story.

The announcement Thursday drew incredulous reactions from some in Congress who wondered aloud why the Obama administration would bow out of a key element of the strategy for protecting Libyan civilians and crippling Moammar Gadhafi’s army.

Price Tag on DADT Repeal Lower Than Expected
A Republican lawmaker trying to make a case that the military is spending scarce dollars implementing a controversial policy to allow gays to serve openly in the military was not prepared for the Defense Department’s answer about how much money has been spent, according to an Army Times article.

Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said he wanted to know how much money that could have been spent on readiness and capabilities had instead been spent on the training and education program to prepare current service members for openly gay troops joining the ranks.

Unemployment Dips For Younger Veterans
For the second month in a row, the unemployment rate has dropped for Iraq- and Afghanistan-era veterans, according to an Air Force Times publication.

The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that the national unemployment rate fell slightly from 8.9 percent in February to 8.8 percent in March.

This marks the 13th month of overall growth in jobs, although the increases remain small.

Navy Now Says 11 Hurt in Hornet Engine Fire
Eleven people, including one Marine and two civilian workers, were injured Wednesday when a Marine Corps F/A-18C Hornet jet engine caught fire aboard the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, the Navy said Thursday, according to a Navy Times article.

The Navy initially reported that 10 sailors were hurt in the incident, which remains under investigation.

Board: Gay Sailor Can Stay in the Navy
A Navy petty officer who was investigated for violating the military’s ban on openly gay service members says a review board at his California base has voted against his discharge, according to a Navy Times story.

Derek Morado said the three-member board voted unanimously after a six-hour hearing at Lemoore Naval Air Station on Thursday to allow him to serve out the remaining three years of his current enlistment.

Budget Impasse Stressing Troops, Forcing Cuts
The services’ senior enlisted advisors had plenty to tell lawmakers about the No. 1 concern among the troops: the effects of the ongoing budget standoff in Congress, including the possibility that troops won’t be paid, permanent change-of-station orders would be delayed and military construction would be cut, according to a Marine Corps Times publication.

“When we start talking about all of our men and women across all our services deployed in foxholes around the world, yet we’re kind of dangling this thing that we may or may not be able to pay [them] … that is certainly on their minds,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Roy, who testified Wednesday with the other senior enlisted advisors before the House Appropriations Committee’s military construction and veterans affairs panel.
