- 1). Select a place on your body where you want your new tattoo. Selecting the canvas for your tattoo will help influence the size of your tattoo. Consider the visibility of your tattoo. If your workplace does not allow visible tattoos, you may need to wear long sleeves to cover any ink on your forearm or wrist.
- 2). Research tattoo designs online, through magazines or by browsing a tattoo artist's portfolio. Many tattoo shops with websites will have samples of their artists' work available online. If your preferred tattoo artist has their own website, you can view their portfolio there. Most tattoo studios also have basic designs available to view at the studio.
- 3). Come up with a basic concept for your tattoo design. Whether you want to design your tattoo from scratch or you want to modify an existing tattoo design, having an idea of what you want for a tattoo will save you and your artist time in creating an original design.
- 4). Visit a reputable tattoo artist or tattoo parlor to discuss your design ideas. You can bring a tattoo design with you, or just explain your ideas. Your artist can sketch your tattoo design. Some will even make a mock stencil to place on your skin and show you how the design will look.
- 5). Schedule an appointment to have your tattoo done. The size and amount of detail in your design will determine the amount of time it will take to complete your tattoo. For larger pieces that are highly detailed, your artist may schedule two sessions to complete your tattoo.
