- 1). Cut off the neck and bottom end of the squash with a knife. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin. You can leave the skin on the squash if you prefer to eat it.
- 2). Cut the squash in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds with a spoon.
- 3). Cut the squash into cubes or strips or leave it halved.
- 4). Add water to your steam pot or saucepan and bring to a boil. Some people like to add salt to the water, but that it is optional.
- 5). Add the prepared squash to the steam rack or steam pot.
- 6). Cover with a well-fitting lid and allow to steam for 25 to 40 minutes or until fork tender. If you chose to leave the skin on the squash, it will take longer to cook.
- 7). Toss with butter and your choice of seasonings, and serve immediately.
