Qutub Khan's tomb or more commonly known as Adham Khan's tomb is a renowned attraction among tourists visiting Delhi. This historical monument which lies towards the North of Qutub Minar in Delhi is found directly before you reach the city of Mehrauli. At present this tomb is preserved by the Archaeological Survey in India. This great monument was a structure which was built in the year 1561 for Adham Khan who was a dignified person in Akbar's army. He worked as a wet nurse to the king and was also the son of Maham Anga.
The story behind his death is a fascinating and tragic one. Adham Khan came upon a clash with King Akbar's prime minister who was called Ataga Khan and he was husband to Ji Ji Anga. However the prime minister was killed from this struggle. Upon the king's orders Adham Khan was thrown down from the walls of the Agra Fort two times and was killed. His mother mourned for him till she died on the fortieth day after his bereavement. In this tomb lie the remains of both the mother and son. The tomb is said to be built by King Akbar with a peculiar design which is not common to the architecture of the Mughal dynasty. However archaeological surveys have proved this kind of designs are built to signify traitors.
In the year 1830 an English officer built his apartment over the graves. However he died shortly after and the structure was used as a rest house by the British for a number of years. It also served as a post office and a police station at one point. By the orders of Lord Curzon the tomb was restored and lies underneath the central dome.
