- 1). Provide a cage that is a minimum of 36 inches long x 36 inches wide x 40 inches high, according to the African Grey Parrot. The cage needs horizontal bars so the African Grey can climb the sides.
- 2). Line the bottom of the cage with newspaper. The bird will enjoy shredding it. The paper will need changing on a daily basis.
- 3). Place wooden perches inside the cage. Use branches of eucalyptus, apple, manzanita or willow. The perches should vary in thickness to help exercise the bird's feet. Never use plastic perches because the African Grey can chew on them and choke.
- 4). Place the cage in an area of the home that is inhabited by people on a daily basis. The African Grey craves interaction and enjoys being part of the family. Most African Greys like watching television or listening to music. Many cages are on casters so they can be rolled from room-to-room, allowing them to be social with the family.
- 5). Provide heavy feed and water bowls. Many cages have special slots where the bowls fit within the cage. Most bowls are made of ceramic material and should be washed daily.
- 6). Feed the African Grey a varied diet. Provide parrot pellets and parrot seeds daily for the bird. Also provide a bowl of mixed vegetables or fruit daily. Allow the bird to eat the fresh food and then remove any remnants. Many African Greys enjoy a piece of corn on the cob. Some of these birds also like pomegranates.
- 7). Provide numerous parrot-safe toys for the African Grey. Parrot toys are available at pet stores, online and at parrot retailers. Alternate toys weekly so the parrot has a variety of interesting shapes and figures to play with.
