Home Remedy for a Tom Cat With a Urinary Tract Infection

    Tom Cats

    • Tom cats generally suffer from urinary tract infections more often than female cats because their urethras are longer and narrower. The infections can have a variety of causes, ranging from viral to cancerous, that require different forms of treatment. It is important to take your cat to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis.

    Identifying Problems

    • Cats with urinary tract disease will struggle to urinate. They will try it often but will pass urine in only small amounts. They might start urinating on floors or other flat surfaces that are cool. These cats will tend to lick their genital area more then they usual do in response to the discomfort they feel. You might also find blood in your cat's urine, but not always.

    Home Remedies

    • Feed your tom cat small and frequent meals of acidic foods. Acidic food promotes healthy urine production. It breaks down struvite, a mineral that commonly obstructs cats' urinary tracts. Most cat food on the market is acidic, but check to make sure. If your cat prefers a food that doesn't have acid in it, consider a supplement. Avoid giving your cat too much acid, as this can cause metabolic and kidney problems, as well as a mineral imbalance.
Canned cat food tends to have more acid than dry food. Canned food obviously contains more moisture, which helps with the production of healthy urine.
Make sure your cat isn't getting too much magnesium in its diet. It should be lower than 40 mg per 100 calories. Most cat food has this balance, but if you feed your cat a specialized diet, you should make sure it's getting the right amount of this mineral.
Make sure there is always plenty of fresh and clean water available. Try putting it in multiple places in the home. The more a cat drinks, the more healthy the urine production will be.
Make sure there are enough cat litter boxes in the house. The number of boxes in the house should equal or exceed the number of cats you have. You should also keep them clean. Cats will avoid dirty boxes, which discourages them from regular and frequent urination.
