The NCAA found that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton did nothing wrong because he did not have knowledge of his father shopping him around to potential schools during the recruitment process.
I want to believe that is true, but I am far too intelligent to.
So Cecil Newton went around asking for $200,000 in exchange for his son signing a letter of intent to play football at their school but Cam knew nothing of it? I am inclined to believe the NCAA is not this clueless and everything they have said in defense of their decision is all a publicity stunt.
Let's take a look at (most likely) why the NCAA ruled Cam eligible to play in the SEC championship game.
This isn't rocket science.
The NCAA loves money.
They NCAA is greedy.
The NCAA cares about nothing but money.
So do not be fooled with their decisions.
Whatever makes sense financially is what the NCAA will do- integrity be darned.
What does this have to do with money? Simple- the NCAA needs Auburn to play Oregon in the BCS Championship Game or the BCS will have a television ratings bombshell.
Oregon and Auburn are an attractive match-up given their high powered offenses.
Neither of them are traditional "elite" programs.
They are simply two good programs traditionally.
The BCS wants nothing but elite programs in their title game.
They may not come out and say this, but it is true.
Elite programs bring in the highest viewership.
If Auburn doesn't play in the championship game, the BCS is stuck with an Oregon-TCU match-up- which would most definitely be the lowest rated title game ever.
While the NCAA does not run the BCS, they are business partners.
If the BCS is not happy, the NCAA takes the heat for it.
Auburn playing for a national championship makes for a great story, on top of all of that.
Gene Chizik is in his second year as head coach of the Tigers, but the bigger story is Cam.
On the field, he has proven to be the top Heisman candidate.
Off the field, he has an interesting story.
The debate around the country will extend up until game time whether or not Newton should even be eligible to play.
This brings big media attention to the game.
Cam Newton could be the difference between getting the casual football fan to watch the game or turning Full House reruns on instead.
Never be fooled with the NCAA's intentions.
They have one color in their sights - green.
