- 1). Decide on the type of game you wish to make. There are many genres from adventure to fighting to turn-based RPGs. If you have a story in mind there tends to be a genre that will work best with it.
- 2). Download the appropriate software for the genre that you wish you make. For point-and-click adventure games, try Adventure Game Studio. To create a Visual Novel game, download Renpy. For classic RPGs, consider Verge3. If you still cannot decide on a single type of genre, download Game Maker which allows for the creation of many types of games. See the Resources section at the bottom of this article for a list of freeware websites.
- 3). Install the software on your computer after downloading. Be sure to read all tutorials on each website to get a grasp of each program. Most programs are self explanatory on the surface, but will require much triall and error for more advanced programming.
