- 1). Determine the design and costume that you want to make. If you are making a costume for a child, ask them what they want to be. Children will often want to be characters from television shows, animals or professions. Look at a photo of the thing that the child wants to be and gather the main elements of the costume. An animal has four legs, ears and a tail. A TV character may have distinctive colors or shapes. A profession will have hallmarks of that profession, such as a stethoscope for a doctor or a tutu for a ballerina.
- 2). Create the foundation for the costume. For an animal, use a sweat suit. You can also use a sweat suit to make a cartoon character. Use colors that mimic the character or the animal. For a profession, use clothing the child already owns or loose pieces of fabric to pin or glue to other clothing to create the costume base.
- 3). Add accessories to the costume. For an animal, use gloves for paws, attach ears to a headband and sew or pin a tail to the back of the costume. For a profession, add a ball for a sports player, ballet shoes for a ballerina, white coat for a doctor or whatever other elements you can find around the house.
- 4). Finalize the costume with makeup or other accessories. Draw an animal face onto the child's nose and cheeks with face paint. You can also draw a cartoon or movie character's face with face paint, such as the red and black design that Spiderman has.
