- 1). Place the US flag at the top of the flag pole.
- 2). Position any state flag under the US flag. The state you are located in would go first, then other states in the order they were admitted to the United States if you have others.
- 3). Fly any flags for the US territories below the U.S. flag and any state flags.
- 4). Place military branch flags below US territory flags. If you have more than one military flag, the proper order is to put the Army flag first, followed by the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, in that order.
- 5). Attach any military organizational flags below the military branch flags. This includes Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA) flags.
- 6). Position any other flags last on the pole beneath all the others. According to the Flag Code, you cannot fly a flag that has any kind of advertising such as a company flag.
- 7). Place any flags of other countries on a separate pole the same height as the pole flying the US flag. The flags should also be similar sized. Some contradiction exists with this etiquette rule. Section 7(c) of the Flag Code says not to place any other flag at the same level as the US flag, but Section 7(g) says to display flags of two nations on separate staffs of the same height. According to a 2008 report to Congress on flag etiquette, flying another nation's flag at the same height as the US flag would not be proper etiquette, but at the same time, is not prohibited.
