The best time to go on a safari to Tanzania is during the dry season. The most popular destinations for a safari to Tanzania are the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti; however the Tarangire National Park is arguably the best safari park in Tanzania to visit during the dry season, due to its larger herds of wildlife and its nine vegetation zones and is the best kept secret on the Northern safari circuit.
One of the very first things that will strike you as you enter the safari park is the vast numbers of baobabs that first capture your eyes. The landscape is gently dotted with these beautiful trees, which seem to dwarf even the giraffe's which graze beneath them.
During the dry season the park is notably even more spectacular as many of the migratory wildlife return to their permanent sources of water along the Tarangire River. Great herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebra and eland gather to in the region until the rain fall comes, which is when they migrate again over to finer grazing pastures.
The park covers just over 2,000 square km's and is situated to the South of Southern Maasailand, the name of the park is derived from the Tarangire River, which is a permanent water source for wildlife in the region and attracts thousands of migratory animals every single year, during the annual cycle of the €Great Migration'.
The dry months of June and September are the finest times in the year for game viewing as thousands of animals and birds come to the Tarangire River. Although this park is exceptional during the dry season, it should be noted that this destination is perfect all year round, with each season offering distinct experiences and geographical diversity. The only real time you should try to avoid this region is in April and May, when the region is subject to serve rainfall, making it near impossible to travel around the roads of the park.
The park is home to a variety of luxury lodges, but my personal favourite is the Tarangire Sopa Lodge. This luxury lodge is hidden amongst the kopjes and is surrounded by the majestic baobab trees. The lodge has seventy five spacious rooms, all with their own private lounge and mini bar. The queen size beds have mosquito nets, ceiling fans to keep you cool and an elegant sliding door to gain entry to your panoramic balcony with an unspoiled view of the landscape beyond.
The lodge has several luxury amenities such as a luxury outdoor swimming pool, which is highly inviting during the warm summer months, a gift shop, internet and library and a laundry and babysitting service.
Tarangire is a popular safari destination for climbers of Mount Kilimanjaro who wish to fit in a short safari to their itinerary. What could be more memorable than having climbed to the top of one of the world's tallest mountains to then experience wildlife and nature up close on safari to Tanzania?
