- 1). Exfoliate damp skin with a wash cloth, a gentle granular exfoliating cream or a mechanical hand held rotating skin cleaning system. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove loose skin and any product residue. Pat face completely dry with a towel.
- 2). Apply moisturizer over your entire face before applying self-tanner. Dry facial skin patches, particularly around your nose or above your lip, will pick up more color from the dyes in the self-tanner product and produce darker spots.
- 3). Apply a dime-size amount of self-tanner to your fingers and spread in a thin layer over sections of your skin, using small, circular motions. Take care when applying the product into nose creases and around the eyes to avoid getting into these sensitive areas.
- 4). Wait the exact amount of time as stated on the self-tanning product's packaging. Do not touch your face after applying the product. Keep hair off your face with a headband, clips or pins. Avoid showering or swimming for at least two hours after applying the self tanner.
- 5). Reapply self tanner every three to five days to maintain your desired color. Moisturize your face daily to maintain your glow. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face, and avoid harsh facial cleansers, retinols and acne treatments, which can fade your tan.
