A handrails is a railing that runs along a staircase serving the dual purpose of ensuring the safety of the person climbing the stairs as well as beautifying the staircase which is otherwise a mundane part of the house. Handrail brackets support and sustain the handrail. If a staircase is not straight then the installation of handrails may prove to be a tricky affair. The more complex the design of a staircase and its handrails would be, the greater are going to be the complications of identifying and fixing the ideal and most suited handrail brackets. A handrail is fixed to its moorings by handrail brackets, which are in turn attached with the balusters. They are placed vertically to the staircase flooring. The guidelines issued by the Domestic Staircase Regulation, recommend the distance between the handrails and the floor at a minimum of 900 mm.
Ideally, the brackets should be placed at the distance of approximately 48" from each other. These brackets support and compliment the hand rail. The basic function of the bracket is that it should support and stabilize the hand rails and balance them well. The brackets are made of wood, aluminum, steel, alloys, etc. For wooden hand rails and brackets, polish is used to add luster and shine. Most of the metallic brackets have a lustrous and shining finish due to the electrostatic powder coating or an acrylic urethane finish. The installation of rails and the brackets depends on the type of staircase.
Selection of the rails and brackets
The selection can be done on many basis such as the material used, design, color, shape etc. The design plays an important role as that adds on a lot of glamour and uniqueness to the otherwise mundane rails and brackets. Many a times, the room has a theme and the rails and brackets need to be designed as per the theme. For example, rails of bamboo can be excellent for the jungle theme while a glass rail bracket will add a more sophisticated ambiance. The selection can be done from the readymade rails and brackets or can be ordered separately to fit the individual needs or design.
