Alabama Retirement Programs

    Employees' Retirement System

    • The Employees' Retirement System (ERS) was created in 1945. The plan takes care of its members through yearly matching contributions and mandatory enrollment. To qualify for the ERS, you must work for the government in some capacity. Firefighters, police officers and city hall employees are just a few of the eligible employees. Vesting requires a minimum of 10 years of service. Full retirement benefits require 25 years of service. Participants may also participate in a 401(k) within the program.

    Teachers' Retirement System

    • Similar to and slightly older than the ERS, the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) is also a program managed by the RSA. It requires a teacher or school administrator to contribute a small percentage of gross earnings to the retirement fund. A teacher is eligible for full retirement after 25 years of service. Participants may also contribute to a 401(k) under the program.

    Tenet Healthcare Retirement Program

    • Despite offering excellent pay and benefits, shortages for medical professionals persist. Nurses, doctors and certified nursing assistants are all eligible to participate in top-notch full-service programs such as the Tenet Healthcare Retirement Program. Six months of full-time service is required before the employee can become fully vested, and participation is optional. Members of this program include hospitals and outpatient centers all across the Birmingham area. In addition to a basic 401(k) program, members can take advantage of health, dental, and vision insurance under one umbrella.
