New Home Alarm Technology Helps Senior Citizens

Do you remember those TV commercials in the late 1980s in which some elderly woman was lying on the floor and turns dramatically to the camera to say "I've fallen, and I can't get up"? Of course you do. That was a popular catchphrase throughout the 90s, due to the fame of that commercial. Now, you can actually help your elderly loved ones avoid situations like that with a home alarm system.

Once you reach a certain age, your body can - and will - just give out on you at any given moment. So, what would happen if your elderly mother, father or grandparent fell and had no way of reaching a phone to call for help? Products similar to the one from the commercial mentioned above were worn by their users around the neck. With the touch of the pendant's button, 911 was called to the home. Alarm systems, these days, come with a key chain that has this very same feature. Along with arm and disarm buttons, there is a panic button that can be pressed during these "I've fallen, and I can't get up" situations.

These home alarm key chains can be carried around by the elderly in their pockets. However, it's probably best to create a makeshift pendant to wear around their necks, in the event that the pocket cannot be reached. Aside from the key chain's protection, your beloved senior citizen will benefit from the many other protections an alarm system provides.

Alarm systems also protect against floods, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. The best part is: Your loved one gets all those kinds of protection, plus the panic button feature, for under $50 per month. Even an elderly person living off Social Security checks alone can afford a home security system without breaking the bank.

If you're worried about grandma not being able to work the "complicated" control panel, your fears will now be wiped away. When picking out the system for her home, you can select an extremely user-friendly, simple control panel. Even someone long in the tooth can memorize a four-digit pin number. Just have her use her year of birth. If an elderly person can't remember that year, they may not need to be living on their own to begin with.

With the password memorized, anyone can handle any situation that might arise with the alarm. Simply instruct your loved ones over and over until they are competent. The basic control panel will only have a number pad and a few other buttons, anyway. If a false alarm goes off, all they have to do is put in the code and hit the disarm button. In the event that they can't figure out how to work the panel of the home security system, a representative from the security company will call the home. At that point, the elderly person will be able to pick up the phone and say everything is O.K. Once the operator hears that, she will shut off the system from the main control center. Fortunately, security companies provide this service 24-7.
