Sciatica Treatments: A Guide to Non-Surgical Relief

Sciatica treatments can be placed in two categories being surgical or non surgical options. If left to heal the sciatica pain usually can take a couple of days or between six to twelve weeks to heal using non surgical methods. The pain management method for non-surgical option also includes some alternative treatments.

Non-surgical sciatica treatments are as follows:
Medication: Plain over the counter medication can help to relieve the inflammation which is the cause of compression on the sciatic nerve. Check with the pharmacist for medication that can help. Oral steroids are another option to reduce the inflammation with brings relief.
Heat/Ice: Heat/Ice packs are also used to reduce pain. Try both methods and determine which works best for you. Some patients feel that the ice packs work best while others believe that the heat pack alleviate pain faster. The pack, either ice or heat, can be applied every 20 or 30 minutes for relief over a period of two hours.
Injections: If the sciatica pain is severe epidural steroid injections can be considered as a sciatica treatment option. The treatment is used to reduce inflammation around the sciatic nerve. After relief is attained further treatment involves starting an exercise program for long term relief.

Alternative Non-Surgical Options: There are several non-surgical alternative methods for sciatica relief. These methods involve acupuncture, massage therapy and manual manipulation. Acupuncture is based on the philosophy that the body is made up of energy pathways. When these pathways are blocked the acupuncturist, uses thin needles inserted at different locations on the patient body to regulate the energy flow thereby bringing relief and healing. Massage therapy help improve blood circulation and mobility to the back therefore stimulating the muscle and the body to start internal healing mechanisms. Manual manipulation is done by a trained health professional as it involves adjusting the spine curvature. The idea is through better alignment of the spinal column pressure on the sciatic nerve can be release. This would in turn provide pain relief caused by compression.

Sciatica treatments represented above are non-surgical. Most sciatica pain can be relieved in a couple of days. After the recovery process begins and the pain decreases start an exercise and condition program. Exercise is one of the best long term methods for relief.
