If it is just a computer crash involving your own personal files, maybe. But if it was your business, in today's heavily technological environment then probably not.
My disaster: My Arrogance (or should I say stupidity).
Back in 2006, I was writing feature articles for the interest security industry concentrating on major magazines published for the eastern European and the Asia pacific markets. And I had also written a fiction novel. Happy me.
Funny thing, the human animal is notorious for not living what we preach. Not long after writing three thousand words for a feature article on business mobility and online internet security vulnerabilities did I have a major internet security €SNAFU€. Of course that was not the exact word that flew from my lips when I learned that 90% of the files on my hard drive spontaneously and irrevocably went the way of the dinosaur. Did I take any of my own internet security advice? No, too smart to worry about the remote possibility of some minor security issue. It's a simple fact; we are our own worst pigheaded students.
Looking back, I actually did in fact survive; barely. I just had to type back into my computer hundreds upon hundreds of pages of my work. Have I ever finished after almost 6 years and even finding some of my work with someone else's name attached to it on the web? Of course not.
But if those were my business files and data that went to the wide blue nothing and had been pillaged there just wouldn't be a business anymore. Case closed, dead man typing. With no focused attention to internet security, antivirus, or computer support that business would have been filed right along with -- well who remembers they didn't make it anyway.
Take nothing for granted! You are not the one special person that will escape all bad and unfortunate things. Actually you can take one thing to the bank. It will happen to you! If you treat this as it is, an undeniable truth, and are prepared, then in just a few mouse clicks you will be right as rain. If not then you join me, wallowing in loss.
In short: Backup and encrypt, backup and encrypt, and then backup and encrypt your files again.
In conclusion: No Excuses, you simply have too much to loss. Get acquainted with companies and products that can handle your internet security concerns. Your security concerns. To be clear, products with the reputation, power and scalability to precisely answer your specific needs.
