There is a lot to write about semi-precious stones, as believe me there is a lot of information available about them.
For the last three years I have been supplying semi-precious stones to shops, market traders and crystal healers.
At the beginning, the stones were just a collection of names and colours, but after becoming more and more involved, learning about their origin and the different applications they can have, the more I learnt about their physical and spiritual properties.
I realised their importance in creating a calming and harmonic environment between our planet and us.
The first three stones that took my interest were Rose Quartz, Rhodochrosite and Rhodonite.
Because of their striking pink colours I wanted to learn why there were different shades of pink and what impact they have on our spiritual being.
In this short article I will be covering some of their physical and spiritual properties, their country of origin and physical composition.
Three of the properties used to classify semi-precious are: Hardness, Cleavage and Streak.
The hardness of a stone is measured in a scale from 1 to 10 (1 can be scratch with your fingernail, like talc, to 10, like Diamond, we all know all how hard diamond is).
A very observant person called Freiedrich Mohs, who lived in Austria (1773 to 1839), developed this scale.
The cleavage of a mineral is the tendency of the material to split in defined planes, creating smooth surfaces.
There are several types of cleavage: perfect, imperfect, distinct, good, fair, and poor Streak.
Streaking the stone on a rough porcelain plate can show the true colour of a gemstone, the resulting power is called the streak colour of a mineral.
For example the streak of Rose quartz is white; in contrast, the streak of Pyrite (false gold ) is black.
Rose QuartzPhysical properties.
Rose quartz is one of the most common chemical compounds, Silcon Dioxide (SiO2).
Its pink colouring is due to impurities of titanium.
Rose Quartz can be found throughout our planet, but the largest deposits can be found in Brazil, South Africa, and Namibia.
Within the quartz group there are other varieties such as Agate, Amethyst, Carnelian, Onyx, Opal, Rock Crystal, Smoky quartz and many others.
Pure silica is colourless to white, but because of impurities it has low thermal coefficient of expansion, it withstands sudden changes in temperature and can be used in components that are subject to wide range of heat and cold.
Unlike ordinary glass, quartz does not absorb infrared or ultraviolet light.
Hardness: 7 Cleavage: Rose Quartz has not cleavage, this means that if it is hit from any angle the result is unpredictable.
Streak: White Spiritual properties.
Rose quartz is called the "Love Stone.
" It is the stone of unconditional love used to open the heart Chakra to all forms of love, be it self-love, family love, or romantic love.
Hence is a good stone for someone who has trouble loving themselves or accepting love from others, for whatever reason.
It is also used to attract love and for love spells.
Rose quartz induces gentleness; it is used for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, fertility, he.
adaches, kidney disease, migraines and sexual dysfunctions.
It is also said to slow the aging process.
RhodochrositePhysical properties.
Rhodochrosite is a translucent to opaque pink, often in banded patterns with layers or areas of white, also occurs in transparent pink to dark red.
On occasion, it called "Inca rose" because of the Rhodochrosite stalagmites formations found in the Inca silver mines in Peru, which date from the 13th century.
The main and oldest deposit of Rhodochrosite is in San Luis Argentina.
Other main sources are; Canada, and the USA.
Rhodochrosite chemical composition is manganese carbonate (MnCO3).
The manganese creates the light to dark stripes patterns.
Hardness: 4.
Cleavage: Perfect.
This means that it breaks in defined planes of 120 and 60 degrees.
Streak: Like Rose quartz it is white.
Spiritual properties.
Rhodochrosite is a strong loving stone.
It is said that it helps to integrate both physical and spiritual energies stimulating love and passion.
Rhodochrosite opens the heart, and eases depression, encouraging a positive and cheerful outlook.
By keeping close to your body, as a tumbled stone or jewellery item, Rhodochrosite is said to improve personality and calm emotional stress.
Rhodochrosite is also said to ease migraines, intestinal problems, kidneys and the Spiritual propertiesdigested problems.
RhodonitePhysical properties.
Rhodonite is a pink or red gemstone.
Its names originate from the Greek word Rhodon, meaning 'rose'.
Its bright colour may be accompanied by black dendritic inclusions caused by the presence of manganese oxide.
Rhodonite was confirmed as separate mineral in 1819, its chemical composition being Silicate of Manganese ( Mn2+SiO3 ).
Since its discovery Rhodonite has been used ornamentally as necklaces, slices and cabochons for jewellery making.
The main sources for Rhodonite are found in Australia, Canada, Russia, India and Madagascar.
Hardness: 5.
5 to 6.
5 Cleavage: Perfect.
This means that it breaks in defined planes of 120 and 60 degrees.
Streak: White .
Rhodochrosite is said to stabilise emotions, bringing order to feelings, allowing body and mind to operate in a harmonic way.
Because of these properties, rhohodonite is helpful for self-confidence as it produces a calming effect on the nervous system.
It also said that help with studies by improving memory, reducing uncertainty and confusion.
