Solutions to eliminate mold from walls and ceilings

Humidity problems on walls and ceilings are common in houses located in particularly humid areas or with important raining seasons, but can also appear in less favourable conditions if the necessary precautions are not undertaken.

Mold appears specially in kitchens and bathrooms. Humidity and moist tend to accumulate in these rooms because of the steam produced by showers and boiling water. The moist tends to stay on textiles and so rags, napkins and tablecloths are one of the reasons kitchen walls have a higher risk of developing mold. In the bathroom,  towels and bathrobes, shower curtains and frequent hot showers contribute to the humidity effect, especially if the room is small and with no ventilation. Extractor fans are therefore a must in these types of rooms.

To prevent humidity problems it is necessary to maintain a routine of frequent air change. Even during the winter months, it is important to ventilate all the rooms of the house. Ten minutes are enough to renew the air in the house and to dry all the moist in the walls before it can develop into mold.

Other tips to reduce mold risk are not leaving wet clothes and textiles to dry inside the house, using anti-mold paint on all wood furniture so that it doesn't store moist and not covering any air vents with furniture. Every once in a while, it is good to move the furniture of small rooms so that the walls behind it can breathe.

If while checking the house for mold you were to find a humidity problem, the first thing to do is cleaning the affected area with bleach mixed with water, drying it and use an anti-mold product like  moist-absorbing salts or pastes. Consider acquiring a dehumidifier if problems in that particular room persist.

A good ventilation routine,  the frequent control of the most risky rooms  and thorough cleaning of kitchens and bathrooms should solve most humidity-related problems. For more tenacious moist issues, it is important to first identify the source of humidity.

Mold could be caused by water leakage, damaged pipes or a faulty isolation of walls during house building. In all these cases, the best way to solve the problem is having a specialist intervene. This way, the chances of completely eliminating the source of humidity  are much higher. Professionals may use a variety of materials and procedures to correct the issue: resin injections will cover any cracks on all types of surfaces and a dehumidification of the walls will assure waterproof sealing against humidity.

Adopting ventilation and cleaning routines is therefore the way to go to avoid moist from accumulating and becoming mold. In the worst cases of humidity, it is best to look for a specialist that will identify the source and solve the problem fastly and with minimum impact on the house's structure.
