I've had a job that has had me transferring from city to city every few years and my final resting place is Washington, D.C. so consider me your Friend Washington DC expert - or any other city for that matter. Follow some of my advice and you'll have friends in no time.
Let me start out by saying it is not very easy to find a friend when you move to a new town for city. It can be very isolating with the exception of the contact with your co-workers. And even they may ignore you for the first few weeks. I remember one new job I started in Toledo, Ohio and there was only one person out of 60 people on my floor that dropped by my office to say hello. I would go to the lunchroom to eat and everyone would be talking and not one person bothered to say hi or include me in his or her conversation. Sometimes I would go home at in tears.
This is not to say that all offices are like that, but my promotions have moved me to eight different cities and it takes a while to really get to know someone because they're all so involved with their current friends, husbands, children, and busy lives. Gathering all of my Friend Washington DC knowledge I hope some of my advice will help you feel less friendless and solitary if you have to move to a new place.
The first place I turn to is the Internet where I look for places to meet friends online. Some cities I've lived in have great social networking sites that for a small fee per event can get you involved in things you're interested in. DC has a social networking site called Professionals in the City that has amazing events where professional singles from the area meet as a group to engage in some of their favorite hobbies. Or, if you're looking for romantic involvement, they have events for that as well. Some of the events they hold are cooking classes given by the areas top chefs, wine tasting, outdoor activities like hikes, clay target shooting, Salsa and other types of dance lessons, outdoor jazz festivals and so much more. All of the events organized by Pros in the City and are held as a group.
Browsing through social networking sites in different cities is a great way to meet new people because you share the same interests. But you have to put in the effort too. Don't sit back and wait for someone to call you - be proactive, get phone numbers, and call them to make plans. Friend Washington DC is sure you'll make new friends if you sign up for things that interest you. So here's to making new friends!
