Learning to let go of a romantic relationship is one of the most difficult processes that one has to undergo in life. It is natural to mourn due to the loss of expectations and the pain caused by separation. However a point comes in life when it is crucial to let go of the past and move on with life, or be forever doomed to live among ghosts.
Lorraine became self-destructive and suicidal and found herself in a psychiatry ward after her relationship with David ended. This was after she attempted to overdose on sleeping pills and is fortunate to be alive because her sister who had noted her depressed state decided to check on her. After repeatedly calling David for at least 20 times, she could not bear the pain that he was ignoring her calls. That is when she decided to end her life. David in his defense said that he felt harassed, invaded and blackmailed emotionally.
This is one case of someone being unable to let go and is not confined to one gender but affects both men and women. Catherine had to obtain a court restraining order against her ex-boyfriend who was stalking her and threatened her whenever he could. She was so inflicted with fear that she almost lost her mind. Psychologists say this indicates an obsessive-compulsive disorder where the mind becomes completely irrational and most people are not able to see their behavior objectively.
However not all people who undergo rejection engage in extreme behavior. Many simply withdraw into themselves and are unable to handle future relationships. Any other romantic relationship in their future may be doomed due to emotional baggage.
The following are tips that may help in getting over him or her:
€ Allow yourself time to mourn and grieve over the death of the relationship. It is advisable to seek professional help or therapy if this goes on for long.
€ Get rid of any items like photos and souvenirs that may be a constant reminder the other person.
€ Do not allow bitterness to settle in your heart but instead begin to console yourself that you deserved better.
€ Create positive energy around yourself by renewing your attitude. A new hairdo, wardrobe anda treat to the spa will help in bringing good feelings about yourself.
€ Get enough sleep, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet as these will help kill stress hormones.
€ Begin a new hobby or a learning course to keep your mind fully occupied.
€ And most important of all, if you meet your ex or he/she is mentioned, maintain your dignity by controlling your emotions.
Dating immediately after the end of relationship is not advisable as you should wait until emotions are healed. The most likely scenario would be to keep comparing the new relationship to your past or repeating the sad sorry of your past life. Therapists agree that the only way to let go of a failed relationship and moving on is by loving yourself enough to give yourself another chance at happiness with someone new.
