My friend Darren loves to go to clubs with its fast-paced music, the intoxicating alcohol and the eye-catching ladies.
It's almost like a hobby to him.
He makes it a point to club at least 3 times a week where he shifts to his other persona known as, Iceman the pick-up artist.
One day, he started complaining about a ringing in his ears.
The ringing had been going on for a week, even in the dead of the night where no other sound could be heard.
It turns out that he has Tinnitus which is not a disease, but a symptom of hearing loss and damage.
Many musicians, DJs and even club patrons suffer from Tinnitus because of the repeated exposure of the ears to loud noises for a prolonged period of time.
So how do musicians, DJs and club patrons prevent Tinnitus while still being exposed to extremely loud sounds? The solution is earplugs.
Despite misconceptions about earplugs blocking out all sounds, there are those specially designed to turn the volume down preventing an overload of sound into your ear.
This makes the music sound much nicer as it simply flows into your ear instead of it being forced in thereby enhancing the clubbing experience.
It similarly applies to those who frequent live bands, wearing earplugs will definitely enhance the quality of sound.
The best part is, these earplugs do not block out human voices therefore having a conversation in a club blasting techno or hip hop beats is possible.
You do not have to strain, shout or get uncomfortably close to the other person when trying to talk to them.
There are three types of earplugs for hearing protection and they are the foam, silicone and flanged earplugs.
The flanged earplugs include most types of musician or 'Hi-Fi earplugs.
These musician or 'Hi-Fi' earplugs are also known as attenuating ear plugs.
It is mostly used by musicians and DJs.
It does not affect the user's perception of bass and treble levels and provides a good balance over the frequency range.
Hence it evenly lowers the volume of sound without hindering their perception effectively protecting their ears and allowing them to perform as they naturally would.
Imagine plugging your Ipod onto a cheap computer speaker and turning the volume up to the maximum level.
What happens is that the sound comes out distorted and unclear.
When you turn the volume down considerably however, the sound becomes clear and smooth.
The concept is similar.
Earplugs do not block out the music and the noise, it reduces the volume to create a better clubbing experience and to protect your ears from damage.
The earplugs are small and discreet therefore it would not be obvious to people whether you are wearing one.
It would be wiser though to wear them and be mocked at as you will be the one to have the last laugh when the person ultimately suffers from Tinnitus and becomes as deaf as a doorknob.
Let me warn you however that there is no cure for Tinnitus and if the ringing, roaring, buzzing or whooshing sounds, depending on the individual, does not stop for a month, then you will have to live with it for the rest of your life.
William Shatner, the actor most known for as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, is a notable person that suffers from Tinnitus and it has robbed silence from him.
Apparently, he had been standing too close to a special effects explosion and the noise of the blast had deafened him for a few days and left his ears ringing for the rest of his life.
If you already suffer from Tinnitus, you may be able to get treatment for Tinnitus to relief the annoying noises it produces by using an active noise masking solution.
Active noise masking of tinnitus works by adding a sound to your environment that is less annoying than the sound you generate internally, and that reduces the sensitivity of your hearing, or "turns down" the volume of your internal tinnitus noises.
