- 1). Examine the hard water stains. If they are under the level of the water, drain the pool until the water line is just below the stains. If the water is already below the stains, there is no need to drain the water.
- 2). Pour 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into a spray bottle. Add 3 cups of water. Shake until the two solutions are thoroughly mixed. The vinegar is an acidic cleaner that will tackle and eliminate alkaline stains.
- 3). Point the spray bottle at the stains. Spray the solution directly on the hard water residue. Do not get the white vinegar into the water because this can alter the water pH. If the water line is too close to the stains, spray the vinegar solution onto a cloth first, then apply it.
- 4). Allow the solution to penetrate the stains for five to 10 minutes, undisturbed.
- 5). Scrub the hard water stains with a pool scrubbing brush. Do so gently to avoid tearing the pool liner. Rinse the area with plain water or water from the pool once the stains disappear.
- 6). Check the pool pump. Turn it on if it's not already running. Chemical circulation is essential to keeping the hard water stains from returning. Test the water pH regularly.
