What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can serve both functional and cosmetic functions.
It involves modification of the eyelid using operative techniques.
It can be performed on both upper and lower eyelids.
With the lower eyelids, it is more likely to be carried out for cosmetic improvements, to remove bags under the eyes.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can help treat a condition in which excess skin from the upper eyelids impairs peripheral vision.
Blepahroplasty can treat puffy lower eyelids but the underlying cause needs to first be understood.
If, for instance, the puffiness is a result of an allergic reaction then this surgery is not the answer.
The procedure basically involves some amount of fat removal and skin tightening.
It is worth mentioning that fat removal, when necessary, should not be done aggressively.
Surgeons should go easy on this part of blepharoplasty.
Your fitness for the procedure will be evaluated by the surgeon.
Your post-operative recovery will happen faster if you are a non-smoker.
The surgeon will ask you questions about your present health, past medical history, any medicines that you may be taking, etc.
You will be informed about the results that can be achieved given your situation.
It is important to have coherence between your expectations and the actual results.
For instance, blepharoplasty cannot remove crows' feet.
Find out if your insurance company will pay you for the procedure.
The chances of getting your claim reimbursed are higher if you want to undergo the surgery to correct a vision defect.
Ask the doctor about any potential changes in the shape of the eye.
You can check out some "before" and "after" photos to get a better idea.
Blepharoplasty can be performed with local anesthesia if carried out as a stand-alone procedure; if it is carried out as a part of a facelift then general anesthesia may be used.
Both upper and lower eyelid cosmetic surgery can be performed in an hour each, this is most likely to be performed as an outpatient procedure.
The incision for upper eyelid blepharoplasty is made along the crease of the upper eyelid.
After excess skin and some amount of fat are removed, the cut is stitched.
The scar heals fast.
For the lower eyelids, the surgeon makes a cut under the eyelashes.
This is known as a subciliary incision.
A little bit of fat and skin are removed and muscles are tightened.
The skin is then pulled taut and the incision is stitched.
The stitches are removed in a week's time.
You can get back to office in a week's time and can start doing strenuous activity in around three week's time.
The surgeon will prescribe pain killers to keep you comfortable once the effect of anesthesia wears off.
The majority of the swelling is resolved in a fortnight.
Complications that follow blepharoplasty include blurred vision for a period of time, bleeding, poor healing, and persistent swelling.
If you encounter any of these get in touch with your doctor immediately.
Sometimes, whiteheads appear after the procedure.
These are removed easily by the surgeon by using a sterile needle.
If you have a thyroid condition then you may experience dry eyes.
