It is always a very common complaint one can hear in a corporate that those who receive big salary work less. This complaint is more vociferous from the people at rank and file and those who are in the middle managers level. On the contrary, they acclaim that they are working hard, always busy and highly dedicated. The complaint is very genuine. But more genuine facts will be visible to them if they are willing to observe the nature and learn something from a sparrow & a hawk.
What does sparrow represent in nature? A very small, harmless bird very commonly found in jungle, garden and even in areas that are highly inhabited by humans - the bazaar. The bird mainly eats on small grains, insects and worms. For a small bird like sparrow, how much food it may require? All its food items are available in abundant in nature. But still it is busy searching and eating its food throughout the day.
Early morning, mid day, hot and humid hours and even during late night, one can see sparrow being busy eating. Such a small bird with reasonably less food requirements, why so busy and taking hardly any rest?
Just see the life of a hawk for comparison. Hawk is a hunter, a bird of prey. In the ecological pyramid, hawk occupies the top position. It is reasonably big sized bird and its food requirements are relatively high. It hunts and eats smaller mammals or other animals. No prey animal is going to give a free and easy chance for the hawk to kill them and eat. The hawk has to work very hard for its food. On the contrary, the seeds, smaller insects or worms can be picked up very easily and not much of a strategy or a precision is required for the sparrow.
For the hawk, it has to focus, strategize, workout the timing of the attack and needs to be patient to win the hunt. During the entire process of planning to attack its prey, the hawk may look apparently doing nothing. Further, hawk cant' afford to be as busy as sparrow as it cannot get its food so easily nor its food is available in plenty. It has to conserve its energy and also require energy to plan and strategize its hunt. Whereas, the same is not true for sparrow.
The people who draw big salaries in the organization are like a hawk. They may not have plenty of job opportunities nor possible to fetch such high remuneration elsewhere. Contrary to that such people are also very limited for many organizations to hire. They will be engaged in strategizing and hence appear idle. The difference between 'manual labor' and 'mental labor' one need to understand and learn to appreciate.
If some employees think that they are like a sparrow in their corporate, they should believe that they have wings to flay high; certainly they can become a hawk in some other organization.
