- 1). Ask a professional stylist to turn a basic bob into an asymmetrical bob. With an asymmetrical bob, different layers in the hair are different lengths and shouldn't match each other. Sometimes one side is even a different length from the other side.
- 2). "Stack" the hair in the back, creating a line that goes upwards from the front of the hair, which will be the longest section; a professional stylist can create this effect. Stacked hair is angled up in the back and short layers fall on top of each other. This will also add volume to the haircut.
- 3). Cut long, slanted, side-swept bangs into the bob haircut, leaving them long enough to cover one eye. While it's best to have a professional stylist cut bangs, it is possible to add bangs yourself. Make sure to use professional hair trimmers instead of basic scissors, cut straight-up-and-down instead of horizontally, and don't take hair from too far back on the top of the head.
- 4). Add bold chunks of color to the bob haircut. This can be done either by having color professionally added at a salon or by attaching faux strands of colored hair to the roots. Bobs often have a lot of layers, so be sure not to leave out the several bottom layers that are visible.
- 5). Blow dry hair using a large round brush and lifting at the roots. Smooth strands with a flat iron once the hair is completely dry. For a disheveled look, straighten and smooth the bottom layers and leave the top layer curly or wavy.
- 6). Backcomb the roots at the top of the head to add lift and volume. Hold this section in place by spritzing the hair with heavy-duty-hold hair spray.
