- Place a sheet of high quality paper between the photos to prevent them from sticking. Pack the photos tightly to prevent warping, and wrap the groups in plastic or place them in plastic wrap to prevent water damage.
- Storing photos in album is an excellent method because photos are accessible but well protected. Keep track of photos by labeling the albums (for example, by years or themes such as birthdays).
- There are a number of websites that offer photo storage, some for free and others for a fee. Not only are the photos safely stored on these sites, but many also allow you to share photos with family and friends over the Internet (see Resources).
- When storing photos on a hard drive, group the photos in named files so you can access them later. A hard drive allows for storing massive amounts of photos in one place. However, all photos should be backed up in case the hard drive fails.
- CDs and DVDs are like electronic photo albums. This is a great method to back up photos stored on a hard drive. CDs can hold up to 700 megabytes and DVDs can hold several gigabytes. CDs and DVDs should be stored in separate cases or a CD/DVD holder to prevent scratching.
