Abstract:
Astudy was conducted to find out the level of suicidal ideation and study stress
among higher secondary school students. It was also tried to find out the difference
among the students based on demographic variables like Gender (Male and Female),
Location of the school (Rural and Urban) and the study stress. The total number of 585
samples were collected through a random sampling technique in Palani Taluk at
Dindigul district. The major finding of the study is higher secondary students from rural
area have high level of study stress.

INTRODUCTION
Marcia Purse (2009) says that Suicidal ideation means wanting to take one's own life or thinking
about suicide without actually making plans to commit suicide. However, the term suicidal ideation is often
used more generally refer to having the intent to commit suicide, including planning how it will be done.
Suicidal ideation is one of the symptoms of both major depression and bipolar depression.
Suicide is one of the significant causes of death worldwide. It is rated as one of the first eight
leading causes of death annually in South Africa. About 5000 suicides were recorded in South Africa
annually. Suicide is considered a psychiatric emergency, and its prevalence is increasing.
Stress is one of the most dreaded diseases in these days in the society. It has spread to all parts of
the society and to people from all walks of life. It is defined as the sum of the body's reaction to adverse
influences. Often we can feel the effect of stress because it is accompanied by an activation of the
sympathetic nervous system.
It refers to a feeling or reaction individuals have when faced with a situation that demands action
from them, especially action that may be beyond their capabilities. (Irwin G.Sarason, & Barbara R. Sarason
2005).
Robert J.et al., (2008) has conducted Comparative Study 290 medical and dental students to
directly compare perceived stress levels encountered during their education. A modified questionnaire
based on Garbee et al.'s Dental Environmental Stress survey was provided to the students by either email or
paper. The purpose of the investigation was to determine if the sources of stress reported by medical and
dental students, both male and female, were due to common factors. Amultivariate statistical analysis was
also conducted to measure stress differences by year in school. Through factor analysis, the survey question

GRTresponses were grouped into five causal categories: academic performance, faculty relations, patient and
clinic responsibilities, personal life issues, and professional identity. The overall findings showed that
dental students had high level of stress than medical students in three of the five categories. The only
category in which medical students demonstrated high stress levels than dental students was in professional
identity. Measures of comparative levels of stress between male and female students for either profession
did not demonstrate any significant differences. Stress levels related to clinical work varied significantly
between the type of professional student and his or her year in school.
OBJECTIVES OFTHE STUDY
1. To find out the level of suicidal ideation of higher secondary school students.
2. To find out the level of study stress of higher secondary school students.
3. To find out whether there is any significant difference among the higher secondary students in their
suicidal ideation with respect to
Gender (Male/ Female)
Location of the school (Rural/ Urban)
4. To find out whether there is any significant difference among the higher secondary students in their study
stress with respect to
Gender (Male/ Female)
Location of the school (Rural/ Urban)
HYPOTHESES OFTHE STUDY
1.There is a significant difference between male and female higher secondary students in their suicidal
ideation.
2.There is a significant difference between higher secondary Students from rural and urban areas in their
suicidal ideation.
3.There is a significant difference between male and female higher secondary students in their study stress.
4.There is a significant difference between the higher secondary students from rural and urban areas in their
study stress.
5.Sample of the study
The present study consists of 585 students studying in various schools in Dindigul district. The
samples were selected by using random sampling technique.
METHOD OFTHE STUDY
The present study was undertaken by using normative survey method.
Tools used
Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS) was constructed and validated by the researcher with the help of the guide.
Study Stress Scale (SSS) was constructed and validated by Radford et al., (1993).
