Fish Oil & Its Anti-Inflammatory Effects

    Features

    • Fish-oil supplements have the ability to reduce inflammation in the body by lowering the production of hormones that worsen inflammation. The supplements are successful in reducing inflammation, but fish oil will not prevent inflammation from occurring.

    Function

    • Fish-oil supplements are used as part of an anti-inflammatory diet for patients suffering from conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. Fish oil is also beneficial for reducing chronic inflammation, which may be responsible for conditions such as arthritis and heart disease.

    Identification

    • Not all fish-oil supplements are the same; ensure that the product that is included in a healthy diet has a greater concentration of EPA essential fatty acids. EPA is eicosapentaenoic acid and is included in most supplements along with DHA, or docosahexanoic acid.

    Significance

    • The health benefits of fish are an important factor when designing a well-balanced diet. Include fish such as mackerel and salmon at least two times per week for natural sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids.

    Warning

    • Fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids can cause the blood to become thinner. Those who are taking medications such as anticoagulants should consult with their doctor before adding these supplements to their diet.
