- 1). Pull up individual wild onions or small patches manually, making sure to grasp it right at the roots. For larger patches or if you don't mind digging in your yard, use a trowel or shovel to get deep below the wild onion roots and dig upward to remove all parts of the bulb.
- 2). Mow over the wild onion on a low setting for very large patches to prepare for herbicide treatment. Mowing also weakens the roots and ensures they won't set seed.
- 3). Apply a post-emergent herbicide to the weeds. (There are no pre-emergent herbicides for wild onion.) You will need to apply this persistently and regularly. Follow the herbicide directions, but commonly you must apply it in November, February and sometime in late spring. You may need to apply it for more than one season.
