The government offers different types of assistance to academic institutions in the country. Some of these include college maintenance grants that help support the development, improvement and construction of academic facilities. Depending on the maintenance grant, target academic institutions may differ. Some grants offer assistance specifically to tribal colleges whereas others target state operated schools. Eligibility requirement depends on the nature of the program. Schools may need to pass certification and documentation from the State. - The Tribally Controlled Community College Endowments program offers endowment support and funding opportunities to tribally controlled community colleges. Specifically, the program provides monetary assistance to help institute endowments. Further, interest gained may be used to help colleges pay for expenses including management and maintenance of the institution. Maintenance and improvement of the college's academic offering and student services are also included. A private individual despite college affiliation may not use net earnings from the initiatives of the program. Earnings may only be used to help maintain the quality of community colleges. Eligible institutions include colleges under the federally recognized Indian tribes. The college's board should be composed of Indian directors. The institution should be operating for over a year to qualify. This program is under the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Education (See Reference 1). The grant is authorized under the Tribally Controlled College Assistance Act.
