Montana has some of the strongest gun safety laws in the United States. Montana has enacted gun safety laws governing the use of firearms by children, carrying concealed weapons and teaching gun safety in the schools. Carrying a concealed weapon can result in a fine of up to $500 or six months in jail or both.
- It is illegal for any adult who has custody or is in supervision of a child younger than 14 to allow the child to carry or use firearms in public without proper supervision. Any adult who does so shall be charged with a misdemeanor.
- School boards may offer a firearms safety course. The course must be developed by an official enforcement agency or association or a person recognized by the trustees to provide the instruction.
Except for law enforcement personnel, it is unlawful to possess firearms or allow them to be possessed or stored in buildings owned or leased by a local school district that are used for instruction or for student activities. Doing so can result in a fine of up to $500 or six months in jail or both. - Unless approved by the railroad, it is illegal for an unauthorized person carry a firearm on a train in Montana unless it is delivered to the operator prior to boarding. Failure to due so can result in a fine of up to $500 or six months in jail or both.
