We all read about this term "content", but to the uninitiated that word means absolutely nothing.
It's the fault of those of us who create websites and do SEO (search engine optimization) because we use a word like that and it scares those people who might become our clients.
Basically, content refers to the words that show up on your website.
For most of us, we want to see more words, as many words as we can, because it gives us something to work with when it comes to optimizing your site (this means setting up your site so that the search engines will find terms you want your business to be known for easily and effectively).
We may not use all the words given to us on the first page, but, overall, we will try to find places to put most of the words that are written because we know that only you know all the ins and outs of your particular business.
What content is supposed to be is natural language that you use in describing your business, your product, and yourself.
What it's not supposed to be is many paragraphs with your keywords (words you hope people will find you by on the search engines) stuffed in every nook and cranny.
I'm not sure how it's been done, but the search engines have figured this out, and if they think you're trying to put one over on them they won't list your site at all, and then you're stuck with a website that only you can drive people to, without any help at all.
If you're not really a writer, don't worry about it.
Anyone who does SEO has learned how to help you write content.
Often I've had to write all the content for a client after asking them to explain to me what it is they do.
It becomes a little easier because part of doing SEO is doing research online to help determine what keywords might work in helping you get higher search engine rankings.
Of course, it might not sound as much like you as you might like, but I've found that some people either like editing for themselves more than writing for themselves, and sometimes they think you've fully captured them, and in those circumstances it's all good.
As I said earlier, though, more is always better than less.
More could always end up giving you more pages than you had anticipated for your site, which is always a benefit because search engines love to see more content than less.
Also, more gives the person helping you with your website more to work with; who doesn't love that? A favorite phrase used online is "content is king".
That's true for many things, but it's definitely true when it comes to creating information for your website.
