Precision in the short game is the key to shooting low scores.
If you can land the ball from around the 100 yard mark close to the pin then you are doing yourself a massive favour.
If you can do this on a consistent basis then you are own your way to birdies and pars.
This is what good chipping and pitching can do for you.
Pitching Anywhere from 40 - 120 yards is pitching distance.
I use the pitching wedge for this shot but it is not uncommon to use a sand wedge or another wedge to pitch.
The pitch shot is basically the same set up as an iron shot but you set up with an open stance.
If you are slightly confused by open stance it just means you are positioning your feet slightly to the left to play this shot.
Open your stance but you will be aiming the club face at the target.
The position of the ball is just a little further back than an iron shot.
The hardest thing to do with a pitch is gauge distance this is something you will need to work at hard.
I like to think of a clock when I am playing a pitch shot.
Obviously the more distance required the more you will have to bring the club back to generate the distance required.
Chipping The idea of the chip is to get the ball as close to the hole as possible to make life easier for yourself.
The more accurate and precise you are with your chipping the easier the putt.
The chip is almost the exact same set up as the pitch shot.
The only thing you want to do is bring your feet closer together this creates more stability as the swing as shorter.
The feet should be less than a shoulders width apart but not to close find the balance you need.
Again like the pitch shot open the stance and point the club face at the target.
The ball this time is further back in the stance.
This means the shot will be much lower and roll towards the target.
Hitting down on the ball with a solid stroke is crucial do not decelerate and give up on the shot.
The trickiest part of chipping is finding the range you will have to vary the swing to find different distances.
My best piece of advice to you is to get out and practice chipping and pitching.
It is a part of the game which is guaranteed to cut strokes.
The closer you get the ball to the hole the less work you will have with the putter.
If you are frequently practicing your feel will develop and you will become a short game wizard round about the green.
