- 1). Sand or strip old finishes from wood surfaces. Wipe clean. Apply wood putty to any holes or cracks. Let it dry and sand again to a smooth surface. Remove sanding dust with a damp cloth. Apply Minwax pre-stain wood conditioner with a clean paint brush. Let it dry.
- 2). Stir stain before and during use. Apply stain with a clean brush or rag in the direction of the wood grain. Leave stain on wood up to three minutes but no longer. Wipe off excess stain with a clean cloth. Apply a second coat after two hours if a darker stain is preferred. Wipe off excess stain. Let it dry for three hours or longer before applying finish.
- 3). Choose a water-based protective clear finish. Stir it before and during use. Apply a thin coat of finish with a clean paint brush. Let it dry. Repeat for additional coats of finish.
