- 1). Select a location for your backyard grill. Try to find an area that has relatively flat ground. Also look for a location that does not have a lot of trees or other brush hanging over the area where the grill will be.
- 2). Dig a hole in the same shape as your grill grate. This might be oval, square or rectangular. The hole should be about a foot deep.
- 3). Line the outside of the grill with rocks. This will form a perimeter around the cooking area which will help keep the fire in place as well as stop someone from reaching or stepping into the flame accidentally.
- 4). Pour charcoal into the hole. This will serve as the fuel for your grill.
- 5). Place the grate above the charcoal. As soon as you strike the match, your will be ready to grill.
