Namibia is a wonderful country in the southern part of Africa. It is home to abundant wildlife. It is also home to Africa's famous big five (the black/white rhino, the African lion, the Cape buffalo, the African elephant and the leopard) and other great animals like the Nile crocodile, hippos and a diverse variety of bird life. This is a wonderful country to visit.
Namibia is a coastal country right next to the Atlantic ocean. The coast is right next to the Namib desert. This is a very brutal and inhospitable place. This place is known as Namibia's skeleton coast. It was given its name because of the many ships that lay wrecked on the beach. They are litered all over the beach. The unfortunate sailors who got washed up and stranded in this area had a very hard time surviving. Their problems were only beginning. This place is very harsh and inhospitable.
However, somewhere along this coast is the desert river. It is a dry river for most of the year. However, the couple of trees that exist in the canyon that leads this dry river to the sea is evidence that there is water beneath the dry surface. The little amount of water here surprisingly support some animals who have adapted to this place. Even desert lions live here is small numbers. Even though there is no grass here to hide and ambush animals, the lions are still relatively successful mostly because of their ability to work as a team. The lions here sometimes get all their moisture and liquid from the blood of their prey. It can be said that here food is never the problem, the real big problem is getting access to fresh water.
The elephant here are very useful to all the animals that live here. The elephants know how to find water. They dig using their feet. Not very deep below the surface of this dry river is fresh water. The elephant filter out the dirty water with their trunks until the water is clean and ready to drink. After quenching their thirst the elephants leave a clear pool of water for the rest of the animals. Baboons are very happy when the elephants arrive. They actually depend on their ability to find and dig for water. There is a ripple effect of great benefit to all the animals of this hostile environment.
This part of Namibia is very unique and an interesting place for guests to consider visiting if they ever have to opportunity to go on safari in Africa.
