Mammogram is generally advised to women above forty as a part of their regular breast screening. It is advised them to attend annual breast screening because the risk of breast cancer gets doubled with increase in age. Often women who are detected with some abnormal change during a physical exam performed by a physician are also asked to consult a diagnostic mammogram.
Mammogram is a gold standard test in detecting even a very small cancer lump that is difficult to diagnose in a physical exam. It is because of mammogram test that every year many lives are saved.
