By this time, most informed Americans have learned most of the initial details regarding the tragic shooting death of black teenager Treyvon Martin by self-proclaimed Florida neighborhood crime watch captain George Zimmerman. Treyvon Martin was unarmed and Zimmerman has yet to be charged with a crime in the matter. Indeed, Sanford, Florida police have chosen not to charge Zimmerman at this time.
Mostly-Right thinks Mr. Zimmerman will eventually be charged with a crime in this case. By all indications it appears that Mr. Zimmerman acted irresponsibly as a crime watch volunteer by pursuing Treyvon Martin for no apparent good reason other than the fact that he looked suspicious to Zimmerman. Zimmerman had contacted police and was informed not to pursue Martin. Subsequently a physical altercation occurred whereby Mr. Zimmerman's nose was broken and he shot and killed the unarmed young Martin.
A national furor has erupted over the incident. Predictably, examinations of whether Zimmerman pursued and killed Martin due to his race has emerged as a primary focus of this tragedy. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Latino. Dozens of protests have ensued around the nation over the incident with emotions focused on the fact that Zimmerman has not yet been arrested or charged in the incident.
Patrik Jonsson of the Christian Science Monitor reports that Mr. Zimmerman was well-known by local police as a community watch chief. In fact, Mr. Zimmerman had expressed interested in becoming a police officer. He was enrolled in Seminole State College taking law enforcement classes. Additionally, he had taken a four-month course through the local police department. All of which has obviously lead to increased suspicion as to why Mr. Zimmerman was not arrested.
The incident has also zeroed focus on Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which allows the use of deadly force if a citizen believes their life is in immediate danger. The law also provides that citizens are not required to flee such an incident if they feel they must defend themselves. Mostly-Right believes in the basic integrity of this law and also in the tenets of our sacred Second Amendment.
There is no question that gun control advocates will pounce upon this ugly incident as yet another way to attack the Second Amendment. Sadly, the focus over whether Mr. Zimmerman committed a crime will be lost and the focus will be on how the "gun killed Trayvon."
Mostly-Right believes Mr. Zimmerman committed a crime in pursuing Trayvon Martin. We also believe had he actually worked within the common sense confines of simply alerting officers to what he believed was a suspicious individual, none of this would have happened. It does not appear that Mr. Zimmerman has any justification regarding Florida's Stand Your Ground Law. Had Mr. Zimmerman been simply going about his own business and confronted by Treyvon Martin, he may have had a defense. The current facts show this was not the case. Mostly-Right has no way of knowing whether Mr. Zimmerman is a racist but we expect the investigation to reveal whether he is or not.
Mostly-Right expects a full investigation will result in this matter and justice will be done for young Martin. However, we also expect gun control enthusiasts to grab onto yet another opportunity to diminish our Second Amendment Rights.
