Applying for Food Stamps

Food stamps are used by governmental agencies to supply needed nutrition to individuals and families. The program is administered by local governments and there are certain criteria that applicants must meet before receiving any type service.

Policies and the procedures for Food Stamp Application vary with individual states. Some states will accept only online an Food Stamp Application while others require that an applicant appear in person at the human services office and or at other delegated locations. It is a good idea for applicants to be familiar with the policies of their state so they can be sure that they meet state requirements before applying. Some states require that an applicant be working actively 20 hours per week or be enrolled in a work program. A salary of less than $2,000 per month for a family of three will generally qualify that family to receive food stamps and in 2010 the monthly benefits for that family would be $538.00 per month.

Once the individual or family has verified that they are in actual fact eligible for food stamps they should gather all their income information which will verify that their Food Stamp Application for government assistance is actually needed in their household. The required documents include social security cards, identification or licenses, and previous tax statements.

If the individual or family goes to an office to fill in their Food Stamp Application then once their application is completed they will be told immediately if they are indeed eligible to receive food stamps, and if they are not eligible they will be told why they were denied. If the individual or family applied online it will take a few days before they receive a letter of denial or approval. If the family or individual is approved they will receive an electronic benefits transfer which comes in a form like a pre-paid debit card with an individual pin number to be punched in after the card has been swiped. Upon reception of the card either the individual or someone in the family should immediately call to verity reception of the card and to activate it. The card is then used at the store where purchases are being made and the pin number entered. The food stamp card will be accepted anywhere a pre-paid debit card is accepted.

Many disabled individuals receive disability benefits and also qualify for food stamps after filling out a Food Stamp Application and being accepted into the program.
