DIY Whimsical Storage Locker

    Painting Your Locker

    • 1). Choose a theme for your locker. This could be anything from your favorite TV show, to a family theme. Choose colors and images that will best represent this theme and keep these ideas in mind as you go to work.

    • 2). Select a color of spray paint for your locker. Set the locker on a pair of saw horses, with a drop cloth beneath it large enough to cover the floor for at least 4 feet in every direction to catch over spray.

    • 3). Shake a can of spray primer well for at least one minute. Apply the primer to the locker with short, brush like strokes, shooting the primer on in bursts to keep it thin and prevent puddling and runs. Work in overlapping strokes, covering the entire locker. Allow this to dry for the label recommended time.

    • 4). Apply two coats of your color of spray paint, using the same technique. Hold the can 8-to 10 inches from the surface and keep it moving steadily to spread the paint as evenly as possible. Allow the paint to dry between coats for one hour. Allow the finish coat to dry overnight.

    Adding Images

    • 1). Select and print off color images from your computer. These can be anything from your favorite websites, photos you have on your computer, or artwork you do on paper. Save images by right clicking on them with the mouse and choosing the "save image as" option. Save the images as bitmaps into a folder you can find easily. Print the images off on your computer printer and cut them out with scissors.

    • 2). Lay the images out, image side down and apply spray adhesive to the back of the images. Paste these onto the locker, pressing them in place, working from the center out, working to prevent wrinkles. Place as many images as you want, wherever you want them.

    • 3). Apply a coat of clear, water based lacquer over the entire surface of the locker to seal the paper images in place and protect the paint job, using a soft bristled, disposable paintbrush. Apply the lacquer in long, straight, overlapping strokes, as evenly as possible to prevent runs and drips. Allow this to dry according to the label instructions before using the locker.
