Great Tips for Choosing Names for Your Baby Girl or Baby Boy

Your little bundle of joy is about to enter this world and you just can't wait to see him or her. However, you're still not sure what to name your baby. You've got the nursery ready and all the baby clothes are in the drawer. The one thing that's missing is what you'll put on the birth certificate.

Choosing baby names can be quite tricky. Are you going to go for what pop culture thinks is cool or are you going to take the classic route? All these questions come to mind because right now, you obviously want what's best for your little one. To make this process easier, here are some tips you need to keep in mind when choosing baby names:

Tip 1: Consider Your Family Name

You obviously want the name to flow smoothly when you pronounce it. You can't go for a name that somehow sounds funny when combined with the last name. Play around with your options and listen to how each combination sounds.

Tip 2: Consider the Initials

As your babies grow, they might have to write down their initials for work. You obviously want to avoid certain letter combinations such as STD or HIV. They'll get teased mercilessly for this and you'll get some flack for it because you didn't think about it when you gave them their names.

Tip 3: Think about the Spelling

Here's something you need to know: names that end in the same letter as your last name can cause confusion and spelling errors. As much as you like a certain name, people might naturally take it out when they hear it said with the last name. Hence, they might have to make corrections in school or say the letters out loud when they dictate their names to someone.

Tip 4: Think about the Meaning

Parents often go for names that are meaningful to them. Look for baby books that tell you the root words of each name and its historical meaning. Or, you can base their names on something that has of personal value to you. Talk to your partner about this and see what your options are.

Tip 5: Get Ideas from Family and Friends

Get ideas from people close to you. They might already have the perfect name in mind and you just don't know what it is. Ask for their opinions and if you're up for it, you can even vote. The people close to you would obviously want what's best for your baby, which makes their ideas just as important.

Tip 6: Consider Nicknames

As your child grows, he or she will have a nickname. Some names might sound nice, but when you shorten it, the nicknames are just way off.
